Number of bikes in our fleet: 6
KTM’s smallest four-stroke enduro bike is the 400 EXC Racing. Like its larger-displacement siblings, the 400 is a great all-’round off-road machine, with electric starting, a subdued exhaust note and full enduro lighting, as well as a compact digital speedometer. The perfect allrounder for all situations. The 400 EXC Racing is characterised by a broad rev range and controllable top end.
Honda CRF450X
Number of bikes in our fleet: 6
Starting with the CRF450R, the phenomenal big-bore four-stroke motocross champion, Honda's off-road engineers created the world's lightest and most powerful off-road racer and fun bike to ever put a smile on a face.
The liquid cooled single features lightweight titanium intake valves that allow the use of smaller valve springs, reducing the overall engine height. A gear-driven balancer reduces vibration, and the aluminium Renthal handlebar is rubber-mounted to reduce rider fatigue and improve comfort.
The CRF450X weighs just 116kg and stomps out 48.5bhp. Long-travel suspension systems front and back have been tuned for enduro riding and deliver light, neutral handling.
The lightweight, 47mm Showa fork with aluminium dampers is derived from the CRF450R and features settings unique to the CRF450X. The fork offers 315mm of travel, 16-step rebound and 16-step compression damping adjustability.
But you really need to know what you are doing before you go blasting down a narrow green lane on this 449cc short-stroke SOHC single. A novice could soon end up in a mess with this state of the art motocrosser. At least there's an electric start if you do get stuck in a rut and the internal automatic decompressor system provides dependable cold and hot starting.
A smooth shifting wide ratio five-speed transmission makes the CRF450 a capable road bike.
Yamaha TTR 250
Number of bikes in our fleet: 8
The Yamaha TTR250 makes a common sense choice for anyone looking for a lightweight all-rounder.
The TTR soaks up everything you throw at it with its competition derived 43mm front fork tubes and fully adjustable rear suspension.
The workhorse four-valve, four-stroke engine inspires confidence as it pulls through the muddiest of going with the same ease that it enables you to steadily filter through traffic. If you do come to halt, the electric start quickly fires the motor back into life, saving you legwork, especially useful on a tiring day out on the trails.
Used extensively on Yamaha's Off-Road Schools the robust TTR has proved to be a great introduction for new off-road riders and is versatile in all conditions.
